Apple Trees

The best two best outside apple trees we've found to plant here on the Kenai are Norland And Parkland. We also have Harcourt and Goodland. O'Brien Garden and Trees sells their trees on arctic root stock which make our trees more hardy than the big box store trees.

Parkland ripens 1-2 weeks before Norland but are smaller

Norland always ripens right when it starts freezing

We lost an apple tree to hungry rabbits one winter that girdled the bottom bark. We now use plastic coiled collar protectors at ground level up to about 3 feet.

Since the price of apples sold locally is relatively inexpensive, we reserve the hoop house for more valuable trees such as cherry plum, apricot, and kiwi, which are only harvested at their ripe times.
